During our tour down south, we have tried to check out as many galleries and bird sanctuaries as possible. I have been told many times from visiting artists, friends and former professors that I would most likely love the Miami contemporary painting scene...... And they are all right. Besides all of the amazing walls by renowned international street artists, the galleries are clean and spacious, with very colorful, fun and fresh paintings, installations, and amazingly intricate sculptures. I will definitely try to show down there in the future. Very inspiring and exciting!!!

So, for the last couple months I have not been making as much art as I wish, because I have been working too much and planning a very DIY wedding (mine!), which I am handling in a very similar way that I have almost any art show.....give myself an ambitious goal, go a bit crazy and pull it together somehow in the end (often at the expense of sanity and sleep.) These are some things I have been making......

So...I have gotten to work on the new paintings. So far, I am not so thrilled with the actual surface quality (a new technique that I was excited about), but am trying to not obsess. I got frustrated earlier today, and decided to play with backgrounds. I then decided to take a break and read a novel, Just Kids by Patti Smith. It provided some perspective and inspiration, and I am now back in the studio. In progress shots below, and the snowy scene out my studio window...there was a whiteout today!

Vermont Studio Center Residency

I recently arrived in Vermont, for my first one month art residency. For the last several weeks, I have been priming canvas (with oil primer) and sanding between layers. This is a new style of canvas preparation for me, but so far I love it. I also spent the last couple months creating several detailed watercolor and gouache "sketches" that have become a whole new beast on their own. As usual, I was impressed by how expediently I completed the first one, which was a feeling I did not have for long. I find that with each new "sketch" my work time practically doubles from the last one, as I become increasingly obsessed with detail, style and technique. Out of these new works, I have chosen to paint three of my favorites, as oils on 36" X 48" Canvas. In the past, I have used mostly photos and drawings as references for my oil paintings. For my new work, I hope to use only my own gouache studies, and allow myself room to adapt and change my painting style. So far I find it very liberating. You can see the progress of these studies below...

This was on my old roof in Brooklyn. There is a shot of me at the end of the movie, walking out of the building in huge sunglasses texting. I am the evil gentrifier. Ironic, because I would hang out with the neighbors regularly, and was fascinated by the birds. big surprise?

Thesis

I have not been very active on the blog lately, because I have been putting all of my energy into my Graduate Thesis portfolio. Im thinking of titling my show BIRDFACE. Still undecided on most titles....

The work is coming along well, and my studio has become my home. I want to keep the pictures under wraps until everything is finished, then I will have a big reveal and update my website.

For anyone that is in the area, or likes bird-watching; there will be an opening on May 21st-- at a (sofar) undisclosed evening time, at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art; in New Paltz, NY.
It will feature my work alongside some awesome fellow MFAs.

I just completely repainted background of this pigeon. still has many more glazes to go, but so far I am happier with it. It was a florescent red meaty skyscape before. Im now going for a rococo inspired "heavenly glow." i think rococo paintings were the soft pornography of 18th century aristocracy. is this pigeon a virgin? i'll let you decide.....

Alexandra Spinney's work deals primarily with themes of absurdity, traditions and morality. She creates iconic animal portraiture set amidst backdrops representative of landscapes, implementing traditional techniques of oil glazing, gild and carved wood. She is currently working on a series of bird portraits, ranging from accustomed representations of beauty to the everyday and overlooked. She is proposing an intrigue into the containments and procurements of reality while drawing reference to imperialist portraiture, haute couture, dutch symbolism and rococo romanticism.
